The Boyters Bridge upgrade is part of the $20.5 million funding allocated to Kempsey Shire Council from the NSW Government’s Fixing Country Bridges program. ACG effectively managed the construction of the new precast bridge by employing various innovative techniques, ensuring a rapid and efficient installation process.
A unique challenge in this project was the sole access provided by the bridge being replaced to a rural area. During the tender process, our team proposed an alternative pedestrian access solution to Kempsey Shire Council. This proposal involved using fibre-reinforced plastic piles and footbridges, reducing disruption to the local mangrove landscape and tidal waterways while significantly cutting down the installation period. Additionally, innovative methods were employed to facilitate vehicle access for residents outside working hours by implementing temporary bridging solutions over piling and excavations, preserving the existing structure for as long as possible.
Our team used 3D modeling to plan the crane lifts – this was crucial due to the site’s constraints, including overhead powerlines, the presence of mangroves, and the need to maintain public vehicle and pedestrian access through the narrow roadway.
Throughout this project, our approach was in alignment with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, notably in mitigating environmental impact and complying with strict regulations in the Coastal Wetland mangrove environment.
