In March 2021, heavy rainfall took a toll on the Oxley Highway, resulting in substantial damage, including approximately 70 landslips, with 10 classified as major incidents. Notably, Oxley slip 8 was among the significant landslips. Upgrading this section posed technical challenges due to the steep terrain and the need for a single-lane alternating flow arrangement during the works.
Recognising the urgency of the situation, ACG was brought on to deliver the essential maintenance work on the Oxley Highway at Mount Seaview, with the goal of ensuring continued access through areas affected by natural disasters. The success of the project was brought about by detailed planning and thorough engagement with stakeholders and the local community.
One of the critical achievements during this project was the presence of a 3.5m deep downstream pit, which posed safety risks due to the difficulty of shoring and the inability to bench back, given the single-lane contraflow traffic arrangement.
The pit was strategically located between the Soil Nail wall and the Lagging Retaining Wall. A precast pit was employed, enabling the crew to install and backfill efficiently, reducing the time required to complete this part of the project. This timely solution allowed for the immediate construction of the lagging retaining wall, mitigating shoring issues effectively
